ABSTRACT

Objectives:To determine the pattern of ocular disorders among stroke patients in Federal Teaching Hospital, Lokoja (FTHL).Materials and Methods:Consecutive new stroke patients seen at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Lokoja over a 3-month period were studied. Data was collected with the use of a structured questionnaire divided into four major sections: bio-data, visual history, results of ocular assessment and NEI VFQ-25 quality of life questionnaire. Data analysis was done using SPSS for Windows, version 23.0. Univariate analyses were presented in the form of frequencies, percentages, means, ranges, and standard deviations, charts and tables.Results:Eighty-three patients were recruited with an age range of 40-71 years, a mean age of 55.3(±7.1) years. Thirty-nine patients (47.0%) were between the ages of 51 and 60 years. Thirty-four (41.0%) patients were females while 49(59.0%) were males. Of 46 (55.4%) patients that had neuro-imaging, stroke was ischaemic in 37(80.4%) and haemorrhagic in 9(19.6%). Of the 63 patients with left sided stroke, 2 (2.4%), 4(4.8%) and 57(68.7%) had severe, moderate and mild and normal visual impairment respectively while of the 20 patients with right sided stroke, 3(3.6%) each had severe and moderate visual impairment and 14(16.9%) had normal or mild visual impairment. Other ocular abnormalities included corneal anaesthesia and macular hole in 2(1.2%).Conclusion:Anterior and posterior segments, together with neuro-ophthalmic disorders were found among stroke patients in this study. Many of the ocular abnormalities are as a result of long-standing uncontrolled hypertension which caused the stroke. It is recommended that awareness should be created among the populace about uncontrolled hypertension. It is also advised that internists should refer hypertensive patients for routine ophthalmic screening.

ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of liquid smoke (LS) produced from beech sawdust and thyme essential oil (TEO) as natural antioxidants in chicken and turkey meatballs during frozen storage. The LS and TEO were added to chicken and turkey meatballs at levels of 1% and 0.1%, respectively, and storage at -18 ± 1°C for 6 months. pH value, water holding capacity (WHC), total volatile nitrogen (TVN), thiobarbituricacid (TBA) value, peroxide values (PV), total phenolic compounds (TPC) and antioxidant activity (DPPH %) were determined. The results demonstrated that the addition of LS or TEO had a positive effect on storage stability and a little change in the physical properties, quality attributes, and significantly (p≤0.05) increased the values of total phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity of chicken and turkey meatballs during frozen storage compared to the control sample. The data revealed that the application of liquid smoke had decreased the value of TBA, TVN, and PV as well as increased shelf life and could be useful to achieve high stability of activity of chicken and turkey meatballs during storage and was better accepted compared to TEO and control.

ABSTRACT

Coccidiosis remains one of the major problems in poultry all over the world. Very limited data on anticoccidial drugs in wild pigeons is available. The current study was aimed to understand the comparative efficacy of sulfadimidine, amprolium and triquen in wild pigeons of Dir district, Pakistan suffering from coccidiosis. The faecal matter of wild pigeons were purchased from the local market for coccidian infection. Results revealed that 88.8% (16/18) were found infected with Eimeria spp. Three positive groups were treated with sulfadimidine (0.2mg/L), amprolium (25mg/L) and triquen. Sulfadimidine was most effective (45%) followed by amprolium (44.6%) while triquen (24.0%) showed less effectiveness against coccidiosis in pigeons. Number of oocysts were 79, 81 and 80 before treatment and 60, 44 and 44 after treatment with sulfadimidine, amprolium and triquen respectively. This study showed that sulphadimidine, amprolium and triquen could not significantly reduce the coccidiosis in pigeons. Further studies are required to clear the mechanism of anti-coccidial drugs in wild pigeons.

ABSTRACT

Infection caused by geo-helminth parasites are called geohelminthiasis are one of the global health problems. Vegetables eaten raw is the principal source of transmission of geo-helminth parasites. Pakistani people believe that eating raw vegetables are a significant source to get important vitamins and minerals. Based on the high incidence of pathogenic parasites and cultivating different vegetable types in the study areas, we conducted this study to evaluate the geo-helminth contamination of raw vegetables in northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. This is a descriptive study comprised, 1942 samples of 25 various types of vegetables. The samples were examined in physiological saline solution using sedimentation and centrifugation methods. The findings were analyzed by Graph-Pad version 5. P value less than 0.05 (95% CI) was considered significant. Results showed that 16.5% (n=322) of all vegetables were contaminated with one or more type of geo-helminth parasites. Garlic was the highest (35%) and cauliflower the lowest (4%) contaminated samples respectively. Ascaris lumbricoides was the most common geo helminth found followed by hook worm species while Trichuris trichura was the least in all the vegetable samples. Leafy vegetables were highly contaminated 25.3% than vegetables with root parts 21.2% and fruity 9.09%. More than half of the contaminated vegetables were contaminated with single species of geo-helminth (P0.05) species of geo-helminth parasites. Education level of vendors and means of display were not significantly associated while types of vegetable used were significantly associated with the prevalence of parasites. The findings of this study provide evidence that consumption of raw [...].

ABSTRACT

Food handlers plays a primary role in the transmission of pathogenically important protozoans and helminth parasites. This study was aimed to evaluate the prevalence of intestinal pathogenic protozoans and helminth parasites among food handlers in and around University of Malakand, Lower Dir, Pakistan. Stool samples were collected from 642 food handlers (all of male) in a cross-sectional study from January to November, 2017. Wet Mount Techniques and concentration methods by using salt and formol–ether solutions. Three hundred and eighty four cases (59.8%) were found infected with one more parasites. Most of the individuals were found infected with helminth (47.6%) as compared to intestinal protozoans (0.93%). Seventy two cases (11.2%) of the cases presented mixed infection with both intestinal protozoan and helminth parasites. The order of prevalence for intestinal helminth was Ancylostoma duodenale (n = 258, 40.1%), followed by Taeniasa ginata (n=96, 14.9%) Ascaris lumbricoides (n = 54, 8.40%) and Trichuris trichura (n=30, 4.60%). For intestinal protozoa, Entamoeba histolytica/dispar (n = 36, 5.64%) was the only protozoan detected. Mono-parasitism was higher than poly-parasitism. Family size income and education level were the factors significantly (P<0.05) associated in the parasites prevalence. Current research showed that IPIs are primarily the foodborne pathogens still an important public health problem in Pakistan. Effective control programs on parasitic diseases transfer and their associated factors are recommended.

Ascaris lumbricoides was the most common geohelminth found followed by hook worm species while Trichuris trichura was the least in all the vegetable samples. Leafy vegetables were highly contaminated 25.3% than vegetables with root parts 21.2% and fruity 9.09%. More than half of the contaminated vegetables were contaminated with single species of geo-helminth (P<0.05) while less than half with multiple types of geo-helminth contamination. Ninety two vegetables samples were contaminated with 2 species of parasites (P<0.05) and 45 with 3 (P>0.05) species of geo-helminth parasites. Education level of vendors and means of display were not significantly associated while types of vegetable used were significantly associated with the prevalence of parasites. The findings of this study provide evidence that consumption of raw vegetable has a high risk of acquiring geo-helminth infections. The authors believe that preventing the human to enter to the vegetable farmland for defecation, avoiding the irrigation of agricultural fields via night soil, and educating the people on proper washing and cooking of vegetables may be useful in reducing parasitic infections.

ABSTRACT

Background. Chronic liver disease (CLD) is linked to immune system failure, which increases the risk of infections and consequences brought on by COVID-19. Therefore, we aimed to compare hospitalized COVID -19 patients with and without CLD to assess the effect of CLD on the severity of COVID-19 infection. Methods. The study was conducted between April and October 2022 at Zagazig university hospitals. It enrolled 108 subjects admitted at the isolation hospital for COVID-19 illness. The cases were allocated equally into three groups, group (I): Patients without evidence of liver disease. Group (II): patients with chronic hepatitis, and group (III): patients with cirrhotic liver. Result. There were significant correlations between the severity of COVID -19 and the CTP classification of Group III (r=0.5 p=0.05 in child A, r=0.08 p=0.05 in child B, r=0.4 p=0.001in child C). In addition, there were significant correlations between laboratory parameters such as INR (r=0.6, p=0.05), bilirubin (r=0.4, p=0.001), ALT (r= 0.5, p=0.05), and AST (r=0.08, p=0.05) and severity of COVID -19 in studies groups. Conclusion: Those with CLD and cirrhosis had a higher death rate. COVID-19 severity related to the Child-Turcotte-Pugh score (CTP) score.

ABSTRACT

Background@#The pedicled anterolateral thigh (ALT) flap has become more popular for the reconstruction of soft-tissue defects in neighboring areas. Nonetheless, few studies in the literature have explored the use of this flap for trochanteric ulcer reconstruction. The aim of our study is to present the author’s experience of utilizing the ALT flap, with a focus on technical elements regarding the flap design and the tunneling method to maximize the reach of the flap. @*Methods@#The medical records of patients who received pedicled ALT flaps for the reconstruction of trochanteric pressure sores were retrospectively reviewed. The patients’ demographic data, operative details, and postoperative complications were evaluated. @*Results@#Between October 2018 and December 2019, 10 consecutive patients (age range, 13–45 years) underwent 11 pedicled ALT myocutaneous flaps for trochanteric pressure sore reconstruction. Each flap was designed around the most distal cutaneous perforator that was included in the proximal third of the skin paddle. The flaps ranged in size from 11×6 to 14×8 cm. The ALT flap was transposed through a lateral subcutaneous tunnel in five patients, while the open tunnel technique was used in six patients. All flaps survived, and no vascular compromise was observed. @*Conclusions@#The pedicled ALT flap is a safe and reliable option for reconstructing trochanteric pressure sores. An appropriate flap design and a good choice of the tunneling method are crucial for successful flap transposition.

ABSTRACT

Aim: The present study aimed to determine the effect of height from ground on the colonization of carrion insect species.Methodology: Rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus L.) carcasses were positioned at two different heights with respect to ground level in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia to determine populations of carrion insects at different decomposition stages. Steel cages were used to defiend the carcasses from flesh eating vertebrates without effecting surrounding environmental condition. Ambient temperatures and the patterns of insect succession were monitored at both heights Results: In total, 14 and 18 different carrion-associated taxa were collected at low and high sites, respectively. The primary and dominant necrophagous colonizer was the muscid dipteran Musca calleva (Walker) at low site and M. domestica (L.) at high site. The dominant beetle species at both sites was Dermestes maculatus (De Geer). The dominant ant species at low site were Cataglyphis holgerseni (Collingwood & Agosti) and Ca. savignyi (Dufour) and Camponotus sericeus (Fabricius) at high site. Interpretation: This research verified that the height of carrion in relation to ground level considerably affected the variety of insect species, particularly flies and beetles

ABSTRACT

Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) enzyme is a major component of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanineaminotransferase (ALT) diagnosis kits. In this work, the LDH enzyme was purified and characterized from buffalo liverfor direct application in the preparation of AST and ALT diagnosis kits. One major LDH (BLLDH) isoform and twoother secondary LDH peaks were analyzed for buffalo liver by diethylaminoethyl (DEAE) cellulose chromatography.BLLDH was obtained by ammonium sulfate sedimentation and chromatographically separated on ion exchange andsize-exclusion matrices. The isolated BLLDH has a specific activity of 17.6 units/mg proteins represented 16 foldsand 32% recovery. BLLDH was manifested homogeneous on native and SDS gels with 35 kDa native mass. OptimumpH of BLLDH was displayed at pH 7.6. BLLDH activity was diminished by FeCl2 and SDS. The produced BLLDH isutilized in constructing of AST and ALT diagnosis kits that were sensible and analogous to trade ready kits.

ABSTRACT

The field of nanomedicine has been developed to achieve enhanced and targeted delivery of biomolecules including nanoparticles. Despitetheir convenience, metal nanoparticles confront strenuous challenges including toxicity, low translocation ability into cells and clearancefrom the organs. This study aims to detect the in vivo cellular interaction between prostatic tissues and gold nanorods on the prostatic tissueand to detect the short-term effect of the gold nanorods to reach prostatic tissue by histopathologic and electron microscopic examinations.Forty-eight adult male albino rats (180-200 g) were used. They were divided into 2 equal groups. The 1st group received injection of saline0.9% (i.P); while, the 2nd group received 1 ml of 300 μg/kg body weight of AuNRs. On days 1, 3, 7, and 14 post-treatment, six animals fromeach group were sacrificed and the prostate was dissected and cut into two sections for performing histopathologic and EM study. It hasbeen found that the short term effect of gold nanorods induced pyknotic and apoptotic changes as well as presence of phagocytosis in theprostate tissues. From this study, it could be concluded that gold nanorods have reached prostate tissue; therefore, it could be helpful inupcoming days to establish a concept on the role of gold nanorods in the management of cellular biological behaviors.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To evaluate laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) flap thickness predictability and morphology by femtosecond (FS) laser and microkeratome (MK) using anterior segment optical coherence tomography. METHODS: Fifty-two candidates for the LASIK procedure were stratified into two groups: FS laser-assisted (Allegretto FS-200) and MK flap creation (Moria 2). Flap thickness was determined at five points. The side-cut angle was measured in three directions at the margin interface. LASIK flap assessment was performed one month postoperatively by Spectralis anterior segment optical coherence tomography. RESULTS: Fifty-two patients (93 eyes) were recruited; 49 eyes were stratified to the FS group and 44 eyes to the MK group. The FS group had relatively even flap configurations, and the MK group had meniscus-shaped flaps. Mean differences between planned and actual flap thickness were 12.93 ± 8.89 and 19.91 ± 5.77 µm in the FS and MK groups, respectively. In thin flaps (100 to 110 µm), there was a significant disparity between the two groups (7.80 ± 4.71 and 19.44 ± 4.46 µm in the FS and MK groups, respectively). However, in thicker flaps (130 µm), comparable flap thickness disparity was achieved (18.54 ± 9.52 and 20.83 ± 5.99 µm in the FS and MK groups, respectively). Mean side-cut angle was 74.29 ± 5.79 degrees and 32.34 ± 4.94 degrees in the FS and MK groups, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Comparable flap thickness predictability was achieved in thicker flaps (130 µm), while the FS laser technique yielded a more predictable result in thinner flaps (100 to 110 µm). Different flap morphology was observed in meniscus flaps in MK-LASIK and flap morphology in FS-LASIK.

ABSTRACT

Egg contamination with microbial pathogens is an enduring worldwide concern. Natural products are frequently recommended as ideal alternatives to substitute synthetic and chemical antimicrobials. Oak galls (Quercus infectoria) are aberrant growths on oak trees that have many medicinal and pharmaceutical applications. Q. infectoria extract (QIE) antimicrobial action was assessed against many microbial species, and used for eggshell decontamination. QIE antimicrobial activity was evidenced against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella Typhimurium and Candida albicans, using different assay methods. Disinfection of eggshell microbial contamination, by immersion in 1% QIE solution, sharply reduced total colony count, yeasts and molds, Enterobacteriaceae. E. coli and S. aureus were completely inhibited after 60min of immersion in QIE. QIE biochemical analysis revealed elevated contents of phenolic and flavonoid compounds. The captured micrographs of S. aureus cells treated with QIE showed strong alterations in cell morphology; cells were entirely lysed and ruptured after 6h of treatment. QIE can be recommended as an effective and natural disinfectant for decontaminating eggshells from pathogenic microorganisms.
